Spate News January 2014

Dear Spate members,

First of all, we would wish you a very happy 2014 and we hope that it will be a good year for you!

We have a couple of things we would like to inform you about:

At this moment three universities in Pakistan are working on mainstreaming spate irrigation in their regular courses: Arid Zone University Rawalpindi, Gomal Zam University and Agricultural College DG Khan.

In Yemen a successful farmer-to-farmer exchange was organized. Farmers from all major wadis in Yemen joined and also farmers from Sudan and Ethiopia were participating.

We are trying to introduce electric milk churners (a model from Pakistan) in Sudan to relieve the burden of women. This is part of the project “Equipment for Rural Women”. For more information check When you have suggestions, please send an email to

Also available on the Special projects section of the spate irrigation website are found quite a lot valuable documents on water rights in Pakistan.

Concept notes for major command area work and water rights distribution in new command areas in DG Khan have been developed to make use of the diversion from the new headworks.

A Design Guideline will be prepared.

We are working on several Spate Notes and Overview Papers on a variety of subjects in English. And also there will be Spate Notes available in Arabic. We are planning to upload them by the end of this month. You can find them on:

And last but not least we would like bring the course “Spate Irrigation and Water Management under Drought and Water Scarcity” to your attention. This will be held in the Netherlands from September 08 – September 19. This course is eligible for NFP fellowship and candidates from NFP countries are encouraged to apply.
